Ben grew up in scenic La Crosse, Wisconsin and received his B.S. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2004. He completed his Ph.D. studies under the guidance of Professor Tom G. Driver at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2011, and then worked in the lab of Professor Matthew S. Sigman at the University of Utah until 2014 as an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein postdoctoral fellow. He started as an Assistant Professor at the University of California (Merced) in 2015 before moving to Santa Clara University in 2020.
